move in!!

I moved into my teeny tiny Dickinson dorm on Thursday and have been so busy I haven’t been able to update my blog until now. I love my dorm and I love my room mate! She moved in yesterday and we have been hanging out together ever since.

Move-in: I unloaded the two cars with all of my stuff in them and waited half an hour for the RA’s to let us check in so they could give us the keys to our room.  I walked up the narrow staircase to the second floor, and put the key into the lock of the door that would lead to the small room that I would be living in my entire freshman year of college.  I opened the door and simply said: “No.” Then I stopped, took out my phone, and took a picture for Holly, my room mate.  She texted me back quickly and said: “It looks like a jail cell!!!!”…..Exactly what I was thinking.

During move in, I met a girl named Sam, who is on the floor under me, and I could tell right away that we were going to get along. Sam and I unpacked everything, said goodbye to our parents, and went to the pick up point where Sam and I met a sophomore who would escort us to a group of other freshman.  In our group, Sam and I met another girl named Marni.  The three of us became friends right away. I always hear stories about people meeting their best friends within the first few days of college and I didn’t think it would happen to me. SURPRISE! The three of us have spent every night together and before our room mates moved in, we spent all day together. I couldn’t be happier at the University of Delaware.

My room mate: I love Holly! We have even more in common than I thought. We think the same things, have the same taste, love clothes, shopping, and ice cream, and I know already that we’ll get along.  I see other people that are complaing that their room mates are already bothering them, but I have nothing bad or remotely negative to say about Holly.

Yesterday (Holly’s move-in): While Holly was moving in to our tiny dorm, I walked to Main Street (which is AMAZING, if you’ve never visited UDel it’s definitely something you want to see when you do visit) and bought my books. It killed me to hear the final price of my texts books, even though I was buying most of them used. Textbooks are so expensive! Anyway, when I got back Holly was here and she and I settled in a little more, went to a floor meeting with our RA, and then went to our building meeting.  After that, we walked around main street a little more and eventually came back to our dorm, showered and hung out with my friends I mentioned earlier, Sam and Marni, and their room mates.  It was a really fun night!!

Today: Holly and I slept until 11:00, woke up, and went to brunch at the Rodney Dining Hall.  The food was very good! I was pleasantly surprised. I ate eggs, hash browns and a peach yogurt parfait. Holly and I decided that it was close enough to lunch that we could help ourselves to the self serve ice cream machine, so we did =) YUM!  Tonight we’re going to dinner and to the activity fair. There’s never nothing to do here at Udel, that;’s for sure.  I’ll blog again soon! Don’t forget to check out the pictures I’m going to put up of my dorm room and Holly and I.

today is move in!

I move in today!!! =D

I can’t believe it. I’m so excited!!!  I am so relieved that everything fit into the cars! We don’t have an SUV or a van, so we are taking two cars to the University of Delaware today. Both cars are packed full of my stuff. The next step is figuring out how I’m going to fit all of my stuff into my dorm room and leave room for my room mate to move in on Saturday. I warned her that I may not leave her any room to move in…then she told me that if she were moving in early that she’d have the same problem with all of her stuff. So this whole move in experience should be interesting because my room mate and I seem to have WAY too much stuff. Put us together and we have WAY WAY too much stuff =) oh dear…

Room mate update: Good news! We have the same favorite color, same computer, and same taste in music. WOO!

P.S. My mom is driving me absolutely nuts. “Who are you texting? Who are you talking to online? Do you want to bring this? How about this? Can I throw this away?” She won’t stop!!!! me: “Mom, I’m texting my room mate, blogging and STOP ASKING ME SO MANY QUESTIONS!!!!!!!!!!” …..I can’t wait to go to college…..

o.m.g

Sooo…I move in tomorrow. yes. tomorrow. I’M GOING CRAZY! My living room is overflowing with things for my dorm room-there is NO way everything is going to fit. I’m going to post a picture of my overflowing living room…I’d sit down before you actually go to look at it though because the amount of stuff in the room may blow your mind.

I have never said anything about my room mate. I got the assignment in the beginning of August when I was away at camp so I was never able to blog about it. I know the room mate is always something everyone freaks out about a little. I know that i was thinking: What if I get a wierdo? A nerd? What if she smells? What if she and I definitely don’t get along and I get the room mate from hell???!!! Well, I got my room assignment and my room mate and learned that I am living in the smallest dorm on campus (oh dear-where am i going to fit all my clothes?! My shoes?!?!) and that it faces the famous train tracks that keep every freshman that’s not used to the train horn awake at night for the first week. Oh well. I’ll get used to it. Then, I read further and saw the name of my room mate-Holly. You can’t get much from a name so I (of course) went on Facebook and looked her up. I friend requested her and said “hey! i’m your room mate!” As soon as she accepted my request and wrote on my wall that she was really excited to go to school, I did some exploring. I went to her page, looked through her pictures, read some wall posts and did what I like to call “Facebook Stalking,” where you look all over someones Facebook page to get to know them.  Her page left a good first impression! I was happy and definitely relieved.  We seem to like the same kind of music, we like the beach (the shore), shopping, clothes, dancing and going to the gym. Perfect. Hopefully we’ll continue to get along and find things in common.

I have procrastinated enough I think and I should get back to packing everything up for move in tomorrow. I’ll blog as soon as I can, with pictures, when I move in to tell how it was =)

Home Again!

I cannot believe that my last post was about two months ago when I was leaving for overnight camp to work as a counselor! It seems like just yesterday. The last night of camp I gave myself a reality check…I was so stuck in the swing of camp that I had almost forgotten that I would be going to college in THREE DAYS!!!!! I shocked myself and started thinking of everything that had to be done within those three days: pack everything up from camp, stuff everything into my car, drive home 5 hours, un-stuff everything from my car, unpack, wash my entire wardrobe that I brought to camp, shower, sleep, run errands, go to Ikea, go to Delaware to buy some things tax-free, order my textbooks, check my e-mail and the list could go on and on. A little overwhelming, right?! Well, I managed to take a step back and told myself that it would get done no matter what.

I came home and my mom walked me to the living room where all of the things I will be bringing to college was sitting until I had to pack it for school. Since I was away all summer working at an overnight camp, my mom had to buy everything I need for college. She was always calling from the Container Store asking if something sounded cool for my dorm room, or if I thought I’d need something like curtains for my doorless closet. My mom told me there was a lot of stuff and that she didn’t know how it was going to all fit in my tiny dorm room (where the largest dimension of the room is 11” 6’). I expected there to be a good amount of stuff but I walked in and walked out again and said “no way!!! There is no way all of that will fit into my tiny room.” All of the stuff in the living room didn’t even include my clothes, so it should be interesting to see whether or not everything fits in my dorm room.

I am moving in on Thursday for Freshman Fest and I will blog between now and then to update my progress on getting ready for school at the University of Delaware in three days. I can’t wait!!!!!! =)
