I cannot believe the semester is over!!! I AM A SENIOR IN COLLEGE!!!! Where did the time go?! It’s unbelievable.  Now that classes are over, and most of my finals are done, I am in full swing for Miss Delaware prep while also still working in Philadelphia at the Academy of Music!  I am still SO busy, but I am definitely not complaining.  I am living in Newark this summer and am commuting to Philadelphia for work a few days a week.  I still can’t believe I have entered the real world as an intern for the Philadelphia Orchestra Association…it’s pretty wild.

I guess I should mention something about the pictures I posted up above!  I had an appearance at the Go Red For Women luncheon at the Christiana Hospital here in Newark and had a lot of fun.  My table was set up next to the table for the Delmarva Blood Bank and my sister titleholder and I decided that after our appearance at the luncheon, we would go across the street, give blood at save a life.  We both had donated blood before here at the UD blood drives for the Delmarva Blood Bank (they have a bunch throughout the year).  We showed up in our dresses with our crowns in our bag and donated blood.  On our way out we even scheduled our next appointment to donate.  Anything I can do to save a life or make someone else’s life a little easier, I will do.  Donating blood is a simple gesture (at least for me) and I will do it as much as I can!

We had our last Wind Ensemble concert of the semester and it was amazing. We played some absolutely incredible pieces, and everyone’s performance was strong throughout the concert. I am so lucky to be able to play and perform with such amazing musicians! I love what I do here at UD.

Spring Break this year was great. We went to Hutchinson Island, Florida and spent our time there just relaxing and laying in the sun. It wasn’t too hot or too cold, so it was perfect! I’m going to try to bring this weather back home with me to Newark…but I’m not sure I can. I can’t wait for the nice weather back home!

The Value of My University of Delaware Education

As a student at the University of Delaware, I have been given the tools and confidence to reach my scholastic goals.  My classes have prepared me for the real world, and my professors have been nothing but supportive and encouraging.  I recently took a huge step in following my dreams of landing an internship at the Philadelphia Orchestra, and thanks to the confidence and preparation from my education at the University of Delaware, I went from having a successful phone interview, to a fantastic in-person interview, to landing the internship.  Now I find myself as the Academy of Music Restoration Fund Development Intern at The Philadelphia Orchestra, one the five major orchestras in the United States.  If I have to start somewhere, why not start big?  My dream of working for the Philadelphia Orchestra has become a reality, which is still really hard to believe, but I could not be more excited and ready to show the world who I am and what I can bring to the table.  I am ready for the real world, and I know it is thanks to the incredible education I have received at the University of Delaware.

Jacki enters the “real world”

So here I come, real world! I can’t believe it.  I have two interviews next Friday for internships with the Philadelphia Orchestra.  It has been my dream ever since becoming a Music Management major at the University of Delaware to work and/or intern for the Philadelphia Orchestra.  Whenever people would ask me what I want to do with my degree, I always answered “Oh, I don’t know. Probably work behind the scenes at the Philadelphia Orchestra.” Funny thing is…I find myself preparing for not one, but two interviews at the Philadelphia Orchestra. Is this real life?!

Please wish me luck this Friday around 3pm as I enter the real world and have my first two job interviews in one day.  The University of Delaware has prepared me for the real world so I know I am ready to rock these interviews!

I’ll keep my blog updated as I prepare and finish my first real-world interviews.

Watch out, world! Here comes Jacki.

Hey!

My biggest advice to you is to visit campus as many times as you can. When you are here make sure you fill out a visitors card at the admissions building on campus.  The admissions officer that sees your application will see that you are sincerely interested if your file says that you have visited campus more than once.  Another thing that will help you stand out is a very original essay.  Your college essay is what your admissions officer will use to get to know you.  The UD admissions officers read ALL of the essays and seriously take into consideration how you come across in your essay, how much you stand out, how well they get to know you through your writing.  Make sure your college essay is about something that makes you unique. No two people are the same, right? What makes you different? Think about that when writing your college admissions essay.

Hope this helps! :-) Let me know if you have any more questions.

Back In The Swing of Things…

My goodness! I can’t believe it’s Spring semester of my junior year…ALREADY. I swear I say this too much but: time is going by faster than I could have ever imagined.  I am only a student at UD for two more semesters after this one. It’s so hard to believe!  I know that this semester will be one of the most challenging, but I also can tell already that it is going to be over before I know it.  I love all of my classes, and all of my professors are so engaging…even in World History (which is not a class I would typically enjoy going to).

I also can’t believe that I am back from studying abroad in London…no one on the trip really wanted to come home.  We all agreed that we could have stayed there for an entire semester. It was truly incredible.

Now that I am back in Delaware, I feel like I have never left. It is great to see all of my friends again, and be back into the swing of things as a student at UD.  I still absolutely love it here.  I wouldn’t change anything about my time and experience at the University of Delaware…at all.

This past weekend we had the chance to travel wherever we wanted within Europe. Half of our group went to Dublin, Ireland and the other half went to Paris, France.  I went to Paris.  It was incredible.  I was only there for two nights and it most definitely was not long enough.  The Eiffel Tower and the Louvre were the highlight of my trip to Paris, and staying in a hostel near the Moulin Rouge was also an experience within itself.  It’s not a matter of “if” I will go back to Paris, it’s more like “when” can I book a flight?!

Day 2 - Still on the wrong side of the road.

Today was my first “full day” fully awake and aware of my surroundings in London.  My day started at 8:45am, after getting about 13 hours of sleep, where I got ready for the day and had breakfast downstairs in my hotel.  Breakfast was great! Except for the scrambled eggs…those were questionable. Anyway, from there, we went as a group (there are 14 of us) on the tube and made our way to the Tower Hill stop, which is where the Tower of London is.  We went on a double decker bus tour of the city of London.  It was great to do all of the “touristy” stuff on the first day to get it over with…although I think we could have gotten off the bus after the first hour and a half.  Bus tours and I don’t get along very well. Why? Because when I was in Italy with my uncle, we accidentally spent about 4 hours on a double decker bus tour. Too much.  We got off of the bus tour and all went to lunch at an amazing pub restaurant, and from there went to the Tower of London. We got a tour from a Beefeater and saw the Crown Jewels.  The Crown Jewels truly take my breath away.  SO many diamonds!  They have a 500k diamond…puts our little Hope Diamond to shame, which I am sure is hard to believe.  After seeing the crown jewels, we came back to the hotel and spent some time booking hostels and such for our long weekend, where some of my friends and I are going to Paris.  We also booked tickets for the London Eye, which we are going to before class tomorrow. I have already seen SO much and it’s only the first real day here…I can’t believe it! For dinner, a few of us went to an amazing pizza place which is right next to our hotel. I’m sure we will be back there this month! After dinner, I went to the gym tonight at the hotel. I am SO proud of myself for getting myself there since I am so tired, and would obviously much rather be out exploring the city with my friends.  Anyway, I really should get some sleep since I will be getting up early tomorrow to go on the London Eye (which I’m a little nervous about, honestly - but I know it will be worth it).  Still getting used to looking right when crossing the street. And realizing no one, and I mean no one, yields for pedestrians.  Stay tuned to my blog for more of my London adventures!
